Contemporary (Modern) Visualizations of Traditional Chinese Belief Systems
Confucianism remains a powerful social force in China and other areas of East Asia. The continuing influence of Confucianism in China can be seen in modern Chinese marketing.
McDonald’s and the fast-food lifestyle are an American export. McDonald’s first restaurant opened in China in 1990. To expand in China, McDonald’s must make its brand relevant to the Chinese consumer. This ad titled ‘Prosperity’ uses traditional Confucian references to connect to certain Chinese consumers.

China continues to have one of the world’s largest Buddhist populations, nearly 250 million.
This mixed media composition, titled ‘Dissected Buddha” by artist Gonkar Gyatso, combines traditional Buddhist imagery with modern visual and textual references. From Buddha’s halo there are airplanes, rockets, and other vehicles emerging. Buddha’s body is made up by various types of stickers. The ground and outer edges of the images contain various text blurbs about the world.
Gonkar, from Tibet, China, painted the image in 2011.
